Hirayasumi: A Heartwarming Slice-of-Life Tale
Hirayasumi is a charming slice-of-life series that explores the daily lives of two cousins living together, each with their own unique perspectives and lifestyles.
Hiroto, a 29-year-old with a part-time job, once aspired to be a professional actor. Though he managed to land a few minor roles, his acting career now seems to be a thing of the past. An inheritance from an elderly woman he used to spend time with has given him a house, providing him with a level of freedom and stability he wouldn't have otherwise.
Enter Natsumi, his 18-year-old cousin, who is just starting her college journey with dreams of becoming a professional manga artist. Despite her passion, Natsumi feels embarrassed to share her ambition and often finds herself overwhelmed by anxiety. She is driven to make something of herself, in stark contrast to Hiroto's more relaxed, go-with-the-flow attitude.
Join Hiroto and Natsumi as they navigate their everyday challenges and joys in Hirayasumi, a story that beautifully captures the essence of ordinary life and the bonds of family.
Along with getting to know these characters, we also get to know some people in their periphery, like Hiroto’s friend since childhood who’s now getting ready to be a father. His settling down is juxtaposed against Hiroto’s carefree lifestyle, and both men seem to notice what can be positive about what the other is doing.
Hirayasumi doesn’t supply any answers on how a person might best live their life, but it shows how different people attempt it. Natsumi, who worries a lot, is amazed when Hiroto tells her he doesn’t worry at all.
Like Hiroto, the manga feels relaxed, easygoing, and free flowing. There’s no exciting action-adventure here, but there are plenty of real world things to deal with, like going to school or work. It might be interesting to learn more about Hiroto’s background wanting to be an actor and then ultimately deciding to drop out of that line of work. Hirayasumi has won awards and been nominated for awards in Japan, and it has a unique, carefree, happy atmosphere that can feel nice against the rat race of life.
