Fool Night* is a manga with a fascinating premise that looks really promising, judging by the first volume. It is set in a future where the sun has been permanently blotted out by clouds, plunging the world into a constant winter and night. With most plants gone, humanity has devised a way to sustain life on the planet through a process called "transfloration," where people near death volunteer to be turned into plants.

The story follows Kamiya, a man who once had big dreams but is now struggling through adulthood, caring for his sick mother and barely making ends meet. People who volunteer for transfloration receive a substantial amount of money beforehand, which they can enjoy as they gradually transform over the years. Desperate for money, Kamiya seeks to undergo transfloration, but because he is not dying, he is not eligible. He tries fabricating his condition, but this attempt fails as well. Then, something remarkable happens: Kamiya discovers he can hear what the transflorated humans are saying, a phenomenon no one else has experienced. This ability raises intriguing questions about the true nature of transfloration and what it feels like to become a plant.

Kamiya’s talent intrigues other people, including a girl who wants to find her father after he transformed. Fool Night’s dystopian world raises real fears about climate change and the future, and being turned into plants brings up ethical issues for characters to struggle with. There’s clearly something going on between Kamiya and his mother, as well as with Kamiya and a childhood friend of his who now works in the medical field, turning people into plants. Kamiya is a sympathetic character in that he tries hard and aims to please, but he still struggles. The first volume, while barely getting into the many aspects it could with this premise, is already powerful, emotional and fascinating. This looks like a series to watch.
