The Japan Society in 2023 screened Mamoru Oshii and Yoshitaka Amano’s anime "Angel’s Egg" (known as "Tenshi no Tamago" in Japanese) in New York City, marking its first official screening in the West since its release in 1985. Now, there's news of a 4K remaster, potentially making the anime more widely available. The remaster is intended to commemorate the anime's 40th anniversary, though that milestone is still a bit ahead.

Tokuma Shoten is overseeing the remaster, utilizing "a new scan of a 35mm film print of the anime." Oshii is involved in supervising the process.

The basic story of "Angel’s Egg" was conceived by Oshii and Amano, with Oshii writing the script and directing the project at Studio DEEN. Amano handled the art direction. The production involved Hiroshi Hasegawa, Masao Kobayashi, Mitsunori Miura, and Yutaka Wada. The music was composed by Yoshihiro Kanno.

Oshii is known for his work on acclaimed titles such as "Ghost in the Shell," "Blood: The Last Vampire," and 1981’s "Urusei Yatsura," while Amano is recognized for his design contributions to "Final Fantasy" and "Vampire Hunter D."

Details such as release dates and distribution plans have not yet been revealed. The Japan Society provided the following description of the anime's plot: In a seemingly tranquil time, two nameless strangers—a girl carrying a mystical egg and a man with a cruciate cane—travel across a primordial realm of decadent ruins, primitive fish, and fossilized relics. "Angel’s Egg" is an allegorical fantasy rich in symbolism and biblical allusions, reflecting on the tragic essence of existence in a world untouched by God.
