Takeshi Obata's contribution to the Dragon Ball 40th Anniversary Gallery project brings a fresh perspective to classic Dragon Ball artwork featuring Gohan and Piccolo. Inspired by the original 1992 cover of Dragon Ball Volume 29, Obata's rendition humorously depicts the duo dealing with a broken-down car, with Gohan inspecting the engine while Piccolo looks on.

The Dragon Ball 40th Anniversary Super Gallery project showcases artwork from various prominent manga artists across Japan, with each artist reimagining a well-known Dragon Ball cover in their own style. Masashi Kishimoto, the creator of Naruto, kicked off the project in 2021 by redrawing the cover of Dragon Ball Volume 11. Subsequent submissions have included artwork by Tite Kubo (Bleach), Koyoharu Gotouge (Demon Slayer), Gege Akutami (Jujutsu Kaisen), and Tatsuya Endo (Spy x Family).

Yoshifumi Tozuka, the creator of Undead Unluck, provided the project's first entry of 2024, offering a comedic twist on the cover of Dragon Ball Volume 21. Tozuka's version features Bulma scolding Gohan and Krillin for flying too fast, adding his characteristic humor to the artwork.

Takeshi Obata is best known for his collaboration with Tsugumi Ohba on the Death Note manga, which follows the story of a high school student named Light Yagami who discovers a notebook with the power to kill anyone whose name is written in it. The series explores themes of morality, justice, and the consequences of wielding power.

The Dragon Ball manga, along with various other manga series, is available in English from VIZ Media, providing English-speaking fans with access to these iconic stories.
